Boardman has already announced two bikes in the series 9 range for 2021, the 9.2 and 9.6 Disc road bikes. Today, Boardman has announced an addition to its 9 series range, with an all-new, full carbon, Shimano GXR spec, ADV 9.0 Adventure bike.
Priced at £1,700 the two most noticeable changes are in frame material and wheel size. The new 9 series bike utilises Boardman’s high-modulus C10 Carbon lay up in a frame delivering a painted weight, on a medium, of 990 grams with a 420-gram carbon fork. Wheel size has reverted to the more conventional 700c over its 650b predecessor, now coming topped with 38mm multi-terrain tyres, combined to balance efficiency on the road as much as off it.
The striking profiles of the flattened, bow-curved seat stays combine with a D-shape lower seat tube allow for a small degree of vertical flex at the rear axle and saddle, absorbing bumps and broken surfaces. Pedalling efficiency was also high on the hit list, and a substantially oversized bottom bracket features on the 9.0, ensuring all input through the cranks reaches the rear wheel.
The ADV 9.0 uses Shimano’s GRX groupset in a 2×11 RX600 / RX810 set up. With a 46-30 tooth chainset and an 11-32 tooth cassette, there’s the same low gear as a 1X option, but with a much higher top end for fast gravel and road efforts.
Wheels are Boardman own, built to a custom specification with 28H sealed bearing thru-axle hubs front and rear and Sapim Race spokes laced to alloy rims with a 20mm internal width. The rims come taped ready for tubeless setup, with valves supplied in the box, so the sealant is all you need to add to enjoy the benefits of losing those tubes. Tyres make a huge difference when riding mixed terrain, and the Panaracer GravelKing SK strikes an excellent balance between rolling resistance on smooth surfaces and grip when things get looser. The ADV 9.0 comes fitted with the 700x38mm width variant with a tubeless ready 120tpi casing.
James Ryan, Boardman Bikes Brand & Design Manager said “For our new flagship adventure model, we wanted the bike to do two things. First and foremost to deliver against its original brief to create a bike that blends speed, comfort and control across almost any surface. Secondly, to demonstrate and further reinforce what Boardman stands for as a brand, by delivering exceptional performance and quality that you would usually expect to see coming with a much bigger price tag.”
